Externalising your thoughts through a ‘brain dum

(1/2) During my run today, I reflected on the fact that I probably didn’t get out for a run all winter. I leaned in to the season and went into full hibernation mode — social media content included. I also stopped sending my newsletter. As a result, my energy levels suffered, and so did my cognition and motivation.

I have been calling it burnout, but it could probably also be identified as a depressive episode. Let’s normalise talking about it. I had been doing some shadow work for some heavy things prior to that, so understandably my self needed to retreat and recover for a little while. I’m so proud of her.

Thankfully, I have come out on the other side, feeling as though I have experienced a shift. A shift in several things, that were silently and stoically working together.

And for this reason alone, I am very grateful for this period of burnout.

As I reflect on the past few months, I’ve discovered that I have a clearer vision about where I want to direct my creative pursuits, and a clearer vision of what no longer fits. Perhaps more importantly, greater confidence to actually proceed with this vision. For what is a vision, without action?

I’ve made lists of ‘do more’ and ‘do less’ and thought deeply about my values and goals. If overthinking and introspection were an Olympic sport this year, I would have made Australia proud!

And so, I’d love to share with you where my mind has been.

Beautiful #branding for a beautiful human @tash_go

I could spend every day in an art gallery. It was

I could spend every day in an art gallery. It was very special to see the Alphonse Mucha exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW, currently showing in the Naala Badu (North building), before heading to the south building to revisit the Grand Courts (artworks from 1400-1900s) and explore some 20th Century artworks from both Australian and international artists. Ran out of time (energy, really; my fav almond croissant and chai latte was calling out to me from across the city and the gallery was getting pretty busy thanks to the annual Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes), so I walked back into the city for some treats before escaping back to my hotel room just in time to avoid the craziness of the Free Palestine protests and march (regular Saturday in the CBD these days).

Alphonse Mucha is one of the few artists who shaped my aesthetic and love for curvilinear line work, so it was amazing to see some of the works I studied in person.

There were so many incredible works, but I have to mention his Portrait of Jaroslava (c1925)- the soft pastel colours with shimmering gold accents was so ethereal to see in person. Much like Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’, no reproduction can match its original.

Anyway, I feel well rested and my creative cup is full. Can’t say I’m ready to leave room service and this delicious hotel bed at the @sheratongrandsydney but I suppose my kiddos need mama to come home at some point 🥰
